THE BANALITY OF EVIL

The design reimagines the archetype of the table as a profound symbol for society, presenting two contrasting worldviews: democracy and totalitarianism.

The table’s solid wooden form reflects the values of openness, equality, and plurality—the cornerstones of a harmonious, democratic society. In stark contrast, one leg of the table is encased in a glass box, embodying the restrictive and oppressive nature of a totalitarian regime. Within this confined space, destruction and malice take root. The presence of woodworms within the glass serves as an allegory for the thoughtless individual—one driven by greed, desire, and a lack of reflection. This concept draws from Hannah Arendt’s notion of the banality of evil, illustrating how mindless actions can perpetuate harm and erode societal foundations.

This table is a statement piece, a call for action. It serves as a constant reminder that active thinking, deliberate action, and meaningful dialogue are vital in the fight against evil.
